About the author

Dr. David J. Dixon has followed two distinct career paths in his life—one as a psychiatrist and the other as an academic in religious studies.

​

Dr. Dixon completed his BSc, MD, and specialist training, along with his MA in the Study of Religion, all at the University of Toronto. He earned his doctorate (DPhil) in Modern History from the University of Oxford. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Dixon has served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, at the University of Toronto, with a cross-appointment to the university’s Centre for the Study of Religion within the School of Graduate Studies. In his psychiatric practice, Dr Dixon has concentrated on psychiatric problems in the medically ill, including work in organ transplantation. His research interests have been in psychosomatic illness, the interface between psychiatry and religion, and religious intolerance.

Now semi-retired, he lives in Toronto with his wife, two daughters, and two dogs.
